- Page 15 - CONTENTS - READING OWLS - YEARS 3 AND 4 Teacher: Courtney Williams Time: Thursday Lunchtime Location: Room 107 TEACHER SELECTED PROGRAM OVERVIEW The Reading Owls co-curricular activity aims to extend the students ’ literacy skills. Students will further build their literacy skills through reading a variety of genre and vocabulary tasks. Shared reading will explicitly model effective reading strategies to extend their comprehension of texts through discussions of the author ’ s craft and purpose, vocabulary analysis and writing tasks. LESSON COMPONENTS Introduction:  Shared Reading; explicitly modelling effective comprehension strategies Lesson:  Independent Reading  Oral discussions of shared reading, focusing on comprehension of the text  Analysing and clarifying vocabulary  Formulating effective sentences that reflect their deeper comprehension of the text SKILL DEVELOPMENT  Reading-inferring -analysing the author ’ s craft and purpose -critically evaluating the text  Explore vocabulary  Writing critical evaluations and creative responses to texts SELECTION CRITERIA Teachers will nominate students to participate in this program. Teachers will use classroom observations and a variety of diagnostic testing to select students.
