- Page 15 - CONTENTS - READING OWLS - YEARS 3 AND 4 Teacher: Courtney Williams Time: Thursday Lunchtime Location: Room 107 TEACHER SELECTED PROGRAM OVERVIEW The Reading Owls co-curricular activity aims to extend the students ’ literacy skills. Students will further build their literacy skills through reading a variety of genre and vocabulary tasks. Shared reading will explicitly model effective reading strategies to extend their comprehension of texts through discussions of the author ’ s craft and purpose, vocabulary analysis and writing tasks. LESSON COMPONENTS Introduction: Shared Reading; explicitly modelling effective comprehension strategies Lesson: Independent Reading Oral discussions of shared reading, focusing on comprehension of the text Analysing and clarifying vocabulary Formulating effective sentences that reflect their deeper comprehension of the text SKILL DEVELOPMENT Reading-inferring -analysing the author ’ s craft and purpose -critically evaluating the text Explore vocabulary Writing critical evaluations and creative responses to texts SELECTION CRITERIA Teachers will nominate students to participate in this program. Teachers will use classroom observations and a variety of diagnostic testing to select students.
