- Page 19 - CONTENTS - COMPETITION WRITING - YEARS 5 AND 6 Teacher: Heidi Funston Time: Tuesday Lunchtime Location: Room 115 TEACHER SELECTED PROGRAM OVERVIEW The Competition Writing Program will provide an opportunity for students to be exposed to a broad range of experiences with the intention of extending their literacy skills and developing a smooth transition into Senior School, in particular, in the area of writing. Students will be exposed to a variety of skills and strategies to enhance and develop their imaginative writing, in the form of recounts, narratives and poetry. They will investigate a range of national writing competitions and determine their suitability and enthusiasm for entry. Students will work on their texts for entry during this class and submit them online. They will require parent permission when submitting entries. SKILL DEVELOPMENT The students will be expected to be able to build on their already well-developed writing skills such as:  Spelling, grammar and vocabulary extension  Analysis of plot, character motives and themes in their written texts  Formal text writing and editing  Poetry reading and writing SELECTION CRITERIA The students selected for the Competition Writing Program will be chosen on the following criteria from their class teacher:  High academic achievement in classwork  Positive teacher observations  Enthusiasm towards writing  Creativity and high-order thinking The students who are selected for this program must be willing to make a strong commitment to applying themselves consistently and working diligently to complete tasks. They will be required to maintain a mature approach to the themes and meeting the writing competition deadlines will be a crucial element of this program. As only a small number of students will be selected for this class, a high level of enthusiasm and rigour will be expected.
