BMG 2020 Grammarian Issue 4

13 STUDENT REFLECTIONS Annika McMillan Literacy Week 2020 certainly was different to my past two years. Even though I have loved being at school and dressing up with my friends, this year allowed me to dress up as a different book character everyday, which was amazing. I also got to share this experience with my sister who is in Prep. I didn’t just have to choose one character but five. My favourite character I dressed as was Matilda as we have been studying Roald Dahl. I also dressed as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, Alice from Alice in Wonderland, Little Red Riding Hood and as a Smurf. I especially enjoyed the visiting author Chrissie Perry. I have read some of her books and thought she was very interesting. She told us that she doesn’t write stories with extraordinary starts and exploding endings, she writes fiction books based on real feelings. Chrissie also said she loved my dress-up. It was wonderful listening to the teachers reading their favourite books and trying to work out the secret word. I also enjoyed decoding the emoji picture clues. I can’t wait until next year. Gabriel Lopes I really enjoyed Literacy Week this year. Even though all the activities were online and I would have preferred to be at school, I thought it was lots of fun. My favourite parts of Literacy Week were: • Listening to lots of teachers and Mr Neal reading different books and then putting the clues together to solve the mystery word. • Dressing up on Wednesday was lots of fun. I enjoyed seeing how all my classmates and teachers were dressed up and guessing their costumes. • My class had an author visit from Chrissy Perry which was really educational. She talked about her inspirations and how she became a writer. She spoke about friendships and emotions and how these affect the characters in her books. Thank you to everyone who organised Literacy Week this year and made it fun for all of us learning online. SRC For Literacy Week this year, the SRC ran some remote activities via the Schoolbox page. Students were able to engage with each other via a forum in which they recommended their favourite novels or series of all time to other students. We also had a poll to see what the favourite genre was for our 100+ members (over both the Maddingley and Woodlea campuses) – with Mystery being the most popular! LITERACY WEEK FROM HOME
