BMG 2021 Grammarian Issue 2

10 WOODLEA CO-CURRICULAR AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM BMG Woodlea successfully launched its Middle School co-curricular program for 2021 in Term One. The rationale behind the program was to ensure that students were experiencing incredible opportunities to further themselves in their areas of interest. Thursday’s co-curricular opportunities have been incredibly popular with nearly 20% of the student population attending each week. Students are able to select from the following: chess, community service, art, sports and Futsal. The chess students are being guided by Melbourne Chess Academy coaches through game play and becoming competition ready. Students have been excited by the challenge of learning new skills and strategies. The Woodlea Art Club is being overseen by Ms Lou Callow. The artwork being completed around the school grounds has been amazing! Students have been working diligently on pieces and murals that are beautifying the Woodlea landscape. The sports’ attendees have been participating in numerous activities with a focus on seasonal sports. Students have been improving their game knowledge as well as working on teamwork and sportsmanship. There has also been Futsal training conducted by the Woodlea Soccer Academy. The students involved in the Futsal squad are being expertly coached by former Brazilian player, Mineiro. Students are honing their skills with the hope that they will soon be competing against other schools in Futsal tournaments. Finally, the Community Service Club has worked diligently to re-establish the vegetable gardens at Woodlea, as well as making fundraising items for local and national charities. The Woodlea co-curricular program has been a resounding success due to the support shown, and is a credit to the whole school community. We look forward to further successes in Semester Two.
