Sport Update – Year 7 to 12

An update from Mr Andrew Perks & Mr Tony Castrignano

ICCES Athletics – 3rd Place for BMG Mustangs

Congratulations to all the Athletes who competed in the ICCES Athletics Championships held at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park on Thursday 10 May.

BMG Mustangs fielded a team of athletes across all disciplines of track and field and all athletes performed well on the day.

Final overall placings saw the Mustangs finish in a best ever 3rd place. This was certainly a result of all athletes giving their best rather than the team relying on the results of one or two highly skilled athletes. It is fantastic that the ICCES Association has such a high standard and even competition across its eight competing schools.

A very strong and competitive Ballarat Grammar School were able to win the shield off Gippsland Grammar.  Placings were;

1st Ballarat Grammar School

2nd Gippsland Grammar School

*3rd Bacchus Marsh Grammar

4th Goulburn Valley Grammar

5th Braemar College

6th Hamilton College

7th Girton Grammar

8th Highview College

As well as a great team performance, there were also some outstanding individual performances on the day.

Ultimate Frisbee State Champs

On Wednesday 9 May the BMG Mustangs sent two boys teams and two girls teams to the Ultimate Frisbee High School State Championships in Parkville, Melbourne. The students competed against many teams featuring players who have competed at a national and international level outside of school.

However, the Mustangs acquitted themselves very well, with the Girls A Team reaching the final and the Boys A Team reaching the semi-finals. The girls lost to a very strong Caulfield Grammar team in the final and ended the day as Silver medalists. The boys also lost to Caulfield Grammar in their semi-final but were able to beat another Caulfield Grammar team in the Bronze medal game. Both the Boys B and Girls B teams also had a successful day, finishing 10th and 6th in the state respectively.

Melanie Freeman of 12G was, for the third year in a row, selected in the All-Star team along with Emilee Jagos 12G and Cooper Stevanov 12G for outstanding individual performance on the day. In addition to this, Cooper has also been selected to the Victorian under-18 team for the second year running to compete at the Youth National Championships in June. Congratulations to all three of these students on a fantastic effort.

Thank you to Mrs. Garner for training and selecting both girls teams, Mrs. Kiley and Mr. Oldaker for coaching the girls teams on the day and to Mr. Castrignano for organising and coaching the boys teams.
