- Page 20 - CONTENTS - MAGICAL MATHEMATICIANS - YEAR 3 Teacher: Jade Cochrane Time: Friday Lunchtime Location: Room S4 TEACHER SELECTED PROGRAM OVERVIEW The Magical Mathematicians Program provides students with an opportunity to expand upon concepts covered in the Year 3 Numeracy Curriculum. The purpose of this program is to extend and challenge students who have proven to be very capable and enthusiastic in their regular mathematics classes. The program will be based on solving open-ended questions using a variety of problem-solving and thinking strategies. We will also spend some time focusing on multi-step questions and mathematical investigations. LESSON COMPONENTS  To teach major strategies and develop flexibility for problem solving  To foster creativity and ingenuity and strengthen intuition  To stimulate enthusiasm and enjoyment for mathematics  To provide for the satisfaction, joy, and thrill of meeting challenges  Encourage team work and social learning  Develop lateral and deeper level thinking SKILL DEVELOPMENT Concepts will focus on curriculum being taught that week during Mathematics lessons and will include: place value, counting and patterns, money, addition and subtraction, chance and data, length and perimeter, multiplication and division, time, area, 2D and 3D shapes, fractions, decimals, angles and lines and capacity and volume. SELECTION CRITERIA To assist with the selection of students for the Mathematics Enrichment program, teachers will nominate students that fit one or more of the following descriptions:  Students must be in Year 3  Achievement of AS or WA grading in Mathematics over the 2018 school year  Teacher recommendation
